Swalings Launch Volleyball and Rugby coaching
After the success of Swalings fun day, which took place at the close of the summer holidays, where children came to participate in volleyball coaching, football coaching, beach games among many other activities Swalings Antigua is set to launch more Sports Clubs for children.
This was Swalings first kids fun day held at Millers By the Sea. It started off well with everyone turning up on time. Children were split up into age groups with the older children having football coaching and the younger children playing volleyball. After an hour the groups swapped over. After a well needed drinks break there were organised beach games including dodge ball, sack races, tug of war, obstacle courses and a bouncy castle. Then it was into the sea to cool off. After 3 hours of fun it was time to relax and have a BBQ and listen to a talk on the turtles over at Jumby Bay. A great day had by all!!
Swalings started as a swimming school teaching children of all ages to learn to swim and personal survival skills in the water. As the popularity grew and the demand for children’s’ activities increased so did Swalings. Last year Swalings School of Soccer was launched coaching boys and girls from the age of 4 to play football. During the upcoming months Swalings is set to launch its Rugby and Volleyball school.
Rugby is a very popular game throughout the world but has not yet really reached the Caribbean. Swalings Development director Graeme says, “Rugby is a fast moving game that involves a lot of skill and teaches great team spirit. It really helps children develop their hand eye co-ordination and spatial awareness. It would be great to see rugby become a sport in the Caribbean and have inter island tournaments. There are many children in Antigua who go to school in Europe or Canada where rugby is very big, by having a rugby club here would give them an early understanding of the game and lots of enjoyment and it can also help others to attain scholarships to schools abroad to further their education and sporting prowess.”
Volleyball is already a greatly participated sport in Antigua but there is not much access for young children to develop their skills early on so Swalings wants to get children involved at a young age. Swalings say “Sport should be accessible to all, not everyone is destined to be a star of the future but everyone can come and enjoy playing sports. We want to give children the basic understanding of team games and sports so they can go on and enjoy them later in life. 99% of the population is not going to become an Olympic Athlete but everyone should be able to learn and play sports. We encourage children to have fun whilst learning something new and exciting.”
Swalings believes sports can help greatly in a child’s development. It helps with interaction with other children, communication skills, hand eye co-ordination, social skills as well as the obvious physical and medical benefits. All the activities they offer help in a child’s development.
All of Swalings coaching staff are qualified to internationally recognised standards and are all first aid trained with a child’s welfare and safety coming first.
